What Is a SIM Swap?
A SIM swap is a process in which an individual’s mobile phone number is transferred from one device to another. This can be done for various reasons, such as when someone upgrades their phone or changes carriers. It involves the transfer of the subscriber identity module (SIM) card that contains all of the user’s personal information and settings from one device to another. The new SIM card will then take over the old number and allow users to continue using their existing services with no interruption.
The process of performing a SIM swap requires authorization from both parties involved, usually through providing proof of identification and other documents. Once authorized, it typically takes only minutes for the switchover to occur; however, some providers may require additional steps before completing the transaction. Additionally, if you are switching between different service providers there may be fees associated with porting your current number over to a new provider.
