What Is an Initial Coin Offering (ICO)?
An Initial Coin Offering (ICO) is a form of crowdfunding that uses cryptocurrency tokens to raise capital for new projects. It is similar to an initial public offering (IPO), but instead of issuing shares, the company issues digital tokens or coins. These coins are typically sold in exchange for other cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, although some ICOs accept fiat currency payments as well. The proceeds from the sale are then used to fund development of the project or business venture associated with the ICO.
The purpose of an ICO is to provide early investors with access to a potentially lucrative asset before it hits mainstream markets.
