What Is Ethash?

Ethash is a proof-of-work algorithm used by Ethereum and other cryptocurrencies. It was designed to be ASIC resistant, meaning that it can’t be mined with specialized hardware like Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs). Instead, Ethash requires miners to use their computer’s graphics processing unit (GPU) or central processing unit (CPU) in order to solve complex mathematical problems. This makes mining more accessible for the average user as they don’t need expensive equipment.

The purpose of Ethash is twofold: firstly, it provides an incentive for miners to secure the network by verifying transactions; secondly, it prevents malicious actors from gaining too much control over the network by making sure no single entity has enough computing power to dominate the blockchain. As such, Ethash helps ensure that Ethereum remains decentralized and secure while allowing anyone with a computer and internet connection to participate in its growth.
